Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm

Job Summary: The University Laboratory Safety Manager develops written documents and materials addressing and detailing chemical hazards, incompatibilities, and health effects. Trains faculty, staff, and students on these topics. Assists principal investigators (PI) and researchers in the development of standard operating procedures specific to their spaces, and/or as they relate to standard lab operations and experimental procedures. Works with labs to identify needs and gaps within the laboratory safety programs and works to address those needs. Provides remediation of high-hazard labs containing large, complex chemical inventories. Provides training or training resources, customized to meet the needs of specific principal investigators. Performs lab inspections and audits. Responds to emergency situations after hours. Assists in identifying and coordinating all laboratory technology issues related to the Patriot Act, Homeland Security requirements, and other mandated programs

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of laboratory safety experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of laboratory safety experience. Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer or Laboratory Safety Officer; OR ability to become certified within two (2) years of hire.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to work in confined hazardous environments wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus. Understanding of scientific practices and procedures and knowledge of laboratory/chemical safety principles and practices. Understanding of the current compliance requirements applicable to research activities and facilities. Ability to educate others in safe work practices and facilitate laboratory training(s). Ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with a full range of personnel that reflect a strong commitment to customer service and collegiality. Enthusiastic work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to operate computer software such as databases and word processing.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in a related field and experience in an academic laboratory environment in a four-year institution of higher education. Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer.
