Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

The Sociology Department is hiring undergraduate student research assistants for the Voices of Home project, a community-based participatory research (CBPR) initiative in collaboration with the F5 Project. This project amplifies the lived experiences of recovery and reintegration among residents of transitional housing programs through photovoice-a qualitative method where participants document their lives via photography. Research assistants will enroll in SOC 492: Research Experience in Sociology for 2 credit hours in the spring 2025 semester as part of their engagement with this project.

Key Details:


  • * Duration: 30 weeks, beginning January 2025.
    * Credit: 2 credit hours of SOC 492 (spring 2025 semester).
    * Paid Hours: In addition to the 2 weekly hours for SOC 492, students will complete 4 paid hours of work per week at a rate of $16/hour.
    * Summer Work: Research assistants will be expected to continue their work during the summer. The majority of summer work can be completed remotely.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Engage in ethical research practices, completing CITI Program training on human subjects research
  • Assist in facilitating photovoice sessions with F5 housing residents, including interviews and focus groups
  • Analyze photographs and narratives, identifying themes and coding qualitative data under faculty mentorship
  • Assist in the writing and dissemination of research findings, including drafting sections of reports, preparing presentations, and contributing to manuscripts for publication or public distribution
  • Support the organization and presentation of a public exhibit, collaborating with F5 and local/state policymakers to raise awareness about supportive housing and reentry challenges
  • Regional travel to F5 housing locations (travel expenses covered)

Minimum Requirements
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 1 credit for the employed academic semester
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Major or minor in Sociology
  • Interest in pursuing graduate school
  • Completed coursework related to and/or experience working with underserved communities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or a strong desire to learn about the sociological research process
  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends, as needed
