Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Department's mission is to improve health for all by creating and translating knowledge into policy and practice and educating current and future health leaders, managers, policymakers, practitioners, and researchers. We offer a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH), Executive and Residential Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA), Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH), executive Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. HPM also offers a Health Policy concentration as part of a school-wide MPH degree (https://sph.unc.edu/hpm/hpm-degrees-and-certificates/). Student enrollment in our residential and executive programs includes about 90 undergraduate students and 300 graduate and doctoral students. We have approximately 35 full-time faculty and over 100 joint and adjunct faculty. Our full-time faculty members are experts in decision science, economics, finance, implementation science, management, medical geography, policy, public health, outcomes research and systems science. Our adjunct faculty have wide-ranging practice and real-world experience, with a passion for teaching.

Support for New Faculty Members

HPM is committed to supporting the success and development of faculty. New faculty will go through a structured on-boarding program that covers requirements for teaching HPM courses. In addition, the Department has a strong and supportive mentoring program. There are formal structures and processes to provide junior faculty with guidance and support to help them become excellent and innovative teachers. The successful applicant will have a mentoring team for regular and ad hoc advice and guidance about teaching and service in HPM, as well as progress towards promotion at UNC. In addition, the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence provides resources and support for teaching faculty, such as individual consultations, Course Design Institutes, and grant programs to support course design and instructional innovation (https://cfe.unc.edu/).

Position Summary:

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM), at the top-ranked Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking applicants for one full-time, fixed term faculty position in health policy and management. Rank: Assistant or Associate professor based on qualifications and experience. This will be a 12-month teaching faculty appointment with the potential for undergraduate program leadership role. We are seeking an enthusiastic participant in the HPM department community who can teach a range of health policy and management courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, including any of the following areas:
* US Healthcare System and Policy
* Healthcare Strategy
* Policy Practice (advocacy, design, and implementation)
* Masters Degree culminating experiences (capstone, ILE)
* Management
* Organizational Behavior
* Human Resources

Individuals with professional experience or interest in behavioral health, rural health, long term care, workforce development, and health equity are particularly encouraged to apply.

Teaching assignments are flexible and may potentially include courses not listed based on an area of expertise that complements or expands offerings in the department.

Brief course descriptions can be found at https://sph.unc.edu/hpm/hpm-course-list/. A typical teaching load for a fixed term faculty member is 15-18 credit hours (five to six classes) per year. We are seeking a faculty member who is interested in teaching in both residential and online formats. In addition to teaching, the selected faculty member is expected to advise and mentor students, review products that students are required to complete (e.g. deliverables for practicums and Capstone projects) and contribute service to the department, University and community.

Although some teaching may be online, this position requires in-person teaching of undergraduate and graduate-level courses, and in-person availability for student mentoring. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

A master's or doctoral degree in health policy and management, business, economics, public health, public policy, public administration, government, social work, nursing, medicine, industrial and operations engineering, or a related field.
Experience in health policy and/or management in health care systems, provider organizations, consulting firms, not-for-profit organizations, government, community, or other health-related settings.
Experience teaching or demonstrated potential to teach the courses/content areas listed above in university and/or work settings to students and/or professionals with varying levels of academic preparation and experience. Teaching experience may include, but is not limited to, formal classroom teaching experience; serving as a teaching assistant; preparing and delivering training sessions, workshops, presentations at professional meetings, and/or guest lectures in the classroom; coaching and mentoring professionals; and/or educating the public.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience and interest in using teaching methods that emphasize and encourage active learning.
Experience and interest in teaching in both residential and online formats.
Experience and interest in advising and mentoring students or professionals.
Experience overseeing projects, practicums and Capstone projects in college and university settings or diverse organizations.
Experience employing strategies to ensure access to resources and promote student success in a public university setting where students reflect the socioeconomic, racial, religious, and other diverse characteristics across the state.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
