The Curriculum in Global Studies (CGS) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) is seeking applicants for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor (TAP) in the area of Critical Development Studies and the Global Economy. Candidates must be able to teach a graduate course on Global Economy and Development, including topics such as theories of development; development policy and interventions; sustainability and environmental justice; the relationship between development and gendered, ethnic, racial and regional inequalities; global political economy and climate change; alternative models or practices of community-based development. Preference will be given to a candidate who can approach these topics with a focus on Global South-North relations, grassroots and/or indigenous approaches to "development" and environmental sustainability, as well as finding creative opportunities and alternatives for the future.

The position carries a 3-3 teaching load, including responsibility for a core master's level course, GLBL 701: The Global Economy-Theory and Topics, for the Global Studies MA program. Other courses will be determined by the needs of CGS and the successful candidate's individual areas of expertise. All courses will be live, in-person instruction and include a mix of introductory and advanced classes. Teaching assistants will be available to support instructors in large-format courses. CGS seeks applicants with demonstrated excellence in teaching and a passion for innovative pedagogues and mentoring students from a broad array of student constituencies and at all undergraduate and MA levels.

The TAP position is a three-year fixed-term, renewable contract position, with standard full-time employee benefits. The position offers career advancement with promotion to the ranks of Teaching Associate Professor and Teaching Professor. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in the Curriculum and university life by attending unit events, workshops, and seminars, as well as taking advantage of teaching and training resources available across campus. The TAP will serve on various CGS committees.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Curriculum in Global Studies is an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences that offers a dynamic undergraduate major and an innovative, 'applied research' master's program. Unlike a traditional international or area studies approach, the Curriculum in Global Studies focuses on analysis of trans-regional and trans-national themes, events, and processes that affect states and societies around the world. Students focus on issues with contemporary global significance and policy relevance. Through our commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring, Global Studies promotes interdisciplinary understanding of critical global issues. In addition, we work to encourage discussions about these issues among our students, faculty, and the broader Chapel Hill community through outreach, events, and other programming. We actively support our students taking advantage of global opportunities outside of the classroom including study abroad, experiential learning, and globally-focused internships and research projects, both locally and abroad.

Position Summary:

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in Global Studies or related fields, including International Studies, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Public Policy, etc. Candidates must be able to teach a graduate course on Global Economy.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
