This position supports our Corporate line of business and is based in Birmingham AL. Initially, this position will report to an office 3-4 days per week, and will have more hybrid work arrangement flexibility after training is completed.

For full consideration candidates should have 3 years tax and accounting experience. For candidates with less experience, we may consider filling the position at a lower level.

We support our team members in their pursuit/maintenance of their CPA.

The Senior Tax Accountant I will primarily be responsible for managing the preparation of various types of tax returns prepared by tax accountants and the external tax service provider, performing tax research as needed, and assisting in the preparation of quarterly income tax provisions. The position demonstrates an understanding of GAAP and SAP accounting for income taxes and the related impact to the financial statements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • 35% - Manage and review the preparation of annual state insurance premium tax returns and the calculation and filing of quarterly installment payments of estimated taxes prepared by external tax service providers.
  • 20% - Prepares income tax provisions and related footnote disclosures as calculated in accordance with the principles of SSAP 101.Leads Tax Accountants in compiling data needed to prepare each provision and works with Statutory Accounting counterparts to ensure all tax reporting responsibilities for quarterly/annual statements are completed. Assist with the compiling of data needed to calculate the quarterly and annual GAAP income tax provision. Responsible for the performance of various internal controls related to the provision process.
  • 10% - Review various non-income, non-premium tax return filings, including but not limited to property taxes, sales/use taxes, franchise taxes, and excise taxes.
  • 15% - Oversee preparation of quarterly premium tax accrual calculations and recording of accruals to the general ledger, as well as reconciliations of assigned accounts on a quarterly basis.
  • 5% - Conducts tax research on an as-needed basis.

Secondary Responsibilities:
  • 5% - Performs internal controls in compliance with establish policies and procedures.
  • 5% - Assist internal and external auditors, state examiners, and taxing authorities, as applicable, by providing appropriate documentation and support when requested.
  • 5% - Mentors and assists other staff members as needed.

Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree (Accounting or Finance) from an accredited institution required.
  • CPA or advanced degree is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of tax accounting/compliance experience is required.
  • Insurance tax accounting/compliance experience preferred.
  • Experience with database General Ledger software preferred.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, & Word required.
  • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must be able to work independently and prioritize work effectively.

Position Salary Range$63,409.00 - $104,635.00The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
