Job Summary
Protects the campus community through use of proactive prevention and outreach strategies who use community-oriented service and problem-solving techniques, seeks to routinely engage the community in programming aimed at identifying and reducing behavioral and criminal conduct that diminishes the quality of the academic experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • CALLS FOR SERVICE
    • May serve as primary responding officer to non-emergency calls or non-person crime calls for service that do not require the presence of a police officer; prepare written incident reports.
    • Enforce University policies and guidelines including parking enforcement and special event rules.
    • May assist police officers during calls for service, property handling, crime scene security, etc.
    • Interpret and explain laws to the public as related to law enforcement processes and procedures.
    • Operate department vehicles and equipment, to include animal control units, police radios and computer systems; may transport apprehended animals to an animal shelter.
    • Complete incident reports and technical reports as required; may be required to respond to subpoenas and testify in court.
    • Physical Security - Lock/unlock university buildings and verify building security. Respond to fire, security, and emergency phone alarms to determine status. Reset alarms after thorough check of the area. Provide event security at University of Illinois athletic contests and other campus events. Act as first responders to medical emergencies occurring on campus property.
  • PRO-ACTIVE SECURITY PRESENCE
    • Conduct general patrol of the campus area on foot, bicycle or via patrol vehicle.
    • Provide routine and, as assigned, targeted patrols of campus facilities and property.
    • Observe for suspicious, disorderly or illegal activities. Secure evidence/property ensuring proper handling and maintenance.
  • PROGRAM ASSISTANCE & MONITORING • Assist daily operations for UIPD outreach programs including: COAST/REACH, Safety Ambassadors, Safe Ride and Designated Driver Shuttle. • Traffic Control, and physical security of campus buildings. • Provide coordination of diverse and complex program issues which involve considerable judgement and evaluation as to political impact and issue-sensitive approaches. ◦ This may involve: evaluating needs and effects, ensuring compliance, providing recommendations. • Support volunteer/student programs to effectively maintain the public safety station activities. This may involve: contacting and training participants, evaluating applications, providing guidance and interpretation of rules. • Handle day-to-day administrative requirements of programs. • Prepare and submit monthly reports of individual and unit work activity.
  • PUBLIC RELATIONS & AGENCY REPRESENTATION
    • Serve as a contact person to citizen inquiries, concerns, and problems; prepare and distribute informational materials and describes support programs; provides direction for diverse community assistance programs.
    • Perform community outreach, intervention, and crime prevention activities as required. Facilitating meetings and/or training associated with policies.
    • Represent the UIPD at campus events.
    • Schedule priorities based upon operational needs and community liaison requirements.
    • Maintains extensive contact with and builds up networking between students, faculty, staff, visitors and other service providers to address diverse issues and problems.
    • May function as liaison to other agencies and/or committees and commissions.
    • Participate in the problem-solving efforts of various neighborhood residents; provides assistance in the development of strategies and gathering of resources.

  • Additional Physical Demands
    Physical Demands - Position involves working outdoors in all forms of inclement weather. Moderate physical activity, alternating between minimum physical activities to periods of extreme physical exertion. Frequent talking, listening, standing, and walking for extended periods of time. Occasional running, sprinting, use of stairs, physically subduing violent individuals, carrying/dragging incapacitated individuals, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling and lifting of 50 pounds or more. Must be able to handle stressful situations, work under pressure, and deal with angry, upset, distressed, suicidal, or hostile people. React calmly and think rationally in emergency and life-threatening situations. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and understand and carry out complex instructions.

    Working Conditions - There is always a risk of personal danger and harm. Some of the work is completed in the office; however, the majority of the work is done in the field. Sometimes there is discomfort in working in all kinds of weather at all hours and adverse conditions and circumstances.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • High school graduation or equivalent.
    • Valid Illinois driver's license. ( Must provide at time of applying )
    • No record of conviction of a felony, or of a crime involving moral turpitude.
    • Current State of Illinois Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC).
    • One year (12 months) of security experience in an in institutional or medical setting.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of federal codes and regulations, State statutes, City of Urbana & Champaign municipal ordinances, University of Illinois rules and regulations (Campus Administrative Manual), and UIPD standards and policies.
    • Ability to take quick, appropriate action in stressful circumstances, maintain composure in emergency situations, and handle confidential information with discretion.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain legible handwriting, type accurately and efficiently, and prepare a standardized report; candidates fluent in a second language are highly regarded.
    • Ability to routinely conduct self in a mature, professional, and respectful demeanor with equal regard to all contacts.
    • Ability to use established policy and innovation in solving customer service and programmatic issues
    • Ability to follow directions and administrative policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
    • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned duties.
    • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    • Ability to adhere to the Clery Act, FERPA, mandatory reporting and Title IX reporting responsibilities.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4212 - Security Officer position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/1/2024. The negotiated hourly rate for this position is $23.87/hr.
