University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa's only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Review treatment transactions and submit claims to insurance and/or third- party payors.
  • Contact patients, insurance companies, and credit/collections for payment acquisition, pre-authorization, and to resolve patient account inquiries.
  • Provide financial counseling to patients and families.
  • Determine if appropriate payment has been made by various entities and work with patients and insurance companies to obtain correct payments.
  • Appeal claim payments and/or denials. Identify undesirable trends and reimbursement modeling errors.
  • Review allowed variances from third party payors.
  • Meet targets set by supervisors regarding assigned areas of the revenue cycle.
  • Identify trends and submit to supervisors to facilitate opportunities for process improvement.
  • Utilize new tools and processes to maximize the efficiency of the revenue cycle.
  • Comply with the established cash handling policies of the department.
  • Compile results of work list and other revenue cycle reports and submit to the supervisor.
  • Monitor registration accuracy and report discrepancies.
  • Communicate with providers, payors, claims clearinghouses, patients, co-workers, supervisors, and departments to resolve revenue cycle issues.
  • May assist or provide training to providers regarding billing procedures.

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum 6 months revenue cycle, health Insurance or related customer/patient focused service experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and proven ability to gather and analyze data and keep accurate records.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications, i.e. Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) or comparable programs and an ability to quickly learn and apply new systems knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and ambiguous situations with minimal supervision.
  • Self-motivated with initiative to seek out additional responsibilities, tasks and projects.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience maintaining professionalism while handling difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain or improve established productivity and quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws.
  • Knowledge of healthcare billing (healthcare revenue cycle) and/or insurance, and/or federal and state assistance programs.
