Heralded as a hub of undergraduate innovation, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) creates and sustains meaningful interactions between students and faculty both within and outside the classroom. The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) is seeking a Research Programs Director (RPD) to become part of the Research and Independent Projects Team.

The Research and Independent Projects Team within VPUE facilitates student participation in original scholarship and fosters intellectual relationships between students and faculty mentors. This small and collaborative team serves as a bridge between Stanford University's educational and research missions by offering students advising, funding, and programming in support of their project ideas across all disciplines.

The RPD directly oversees the VPUE Student Grants program that funds undergraduate independent research, arts, and senior synthesis projects with an annual budget of approximately $1.3 million. The RPD collaborates with other team members to design, assess, and execute other research-related programs, including annual undergraduate research symposia and a range of awards and recognition programs. The RPD may manage the grant-related work of approximately 15 cross-team independent contributors, as well as the work of fixed-term student staff.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, evaluating, and running the processes that make up multiple high-impact and highly visible academic research funding (>$1.3 million annually) and enrichment programs for undergraduates.

  • Managing nuanced review processes for competitive grants and recognition programs across all undergraduate disciplines.

  • Recruiting, training, and managing independent contributors from other teams who variously contribute to grant review, research advising, academic programming, and communication processes for the team.

  • Devising processes and communications that help students and faculty navigate a complex policy environment dealing with international travel, human subjects research, intellectual property, etc.

  • Assessing and adjudicating faculty, staff, and student requests for exceptions to program policies. Considering challenges or appeals of rejected applications to ensure equity of opportunities.

  • Advising the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Research Opportunities on the long-term needs of funding and enrichment programs for students. Analyzing data for use in strategic evaluation of program expansion plans.

  • Collaborating with campus partners such as Risk Management, the Office of Community Standards, Haas Center for Public Service, Undergraduate Advising & Research, and the Office of International Affairs to reimagine our work and represent VPUE's interests and priorities.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, stakeholders, and managers.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to review and analyze complex information.

  • Experience with web-based administrative systems or grant application systems

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to ensure compliance with a range of University and external policies.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse student, department and faculty body.

You will also be able to leverage your:

  • Graduate-level experience teaching and conducting research.

  • Advanced skills in coaching or mentoring undergraduates.

*-Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of his or her job.
