Department Information

Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department, University Environmental Health and Safety, and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

Job Summary

  • Answers and prioritizes requests for emergency services and complaints involving fires, accidents, disturbances, and criminal activities from various sources and in a variety of communication methods (phone, radio, alarm systems, computer hardware/software, and face-to-face).
  • Assesses fire and security alarm activations and dispatches emergency responders as needed; recognizes alarm malfunctions and/or issues and facilitates fixes.
  • Determines nature, location and priority of emergencies and enters information into computer aided dispatch system.
  • Retrieves and enters data into department¿s records management system; accesses state and federal crime files through the Indiana Data and Communication system (IDACS) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC); provides information to law enforcement personnel as requested or as deemed important from these data sources.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state and federal regulations for communication and record management to include retention and destruction, accuracy and safe storage of records, report requirements and retrieval.
  • Assists with and provides informal training to officers, part time employees, and cadets in the operation and procedures of the communications center.
  • May act in a lead capacity and provide guidance to junior dispatch and hourly staff.

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred
  • 1 year communications, switchboard, dispatching or related experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • Public safety telecommunications certificate.
SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient communication skills.
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills.
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality.

Intermediate Requirements:

EDUCATION

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of all required training to perform independently as public safety dispatcher
Preferred
  • 2 years of telecommunications experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • Advanced public safety telecommunications certificate or communications training officer certificate.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
