The Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University invites applications for a full-time Professor of Practice (non-tenure track, 3-year renewable appointment) in studio art with a focus on photography and lens-based media. Appointment to begin July 2025. The Newcomb Art department is one of the oldest art departments in the South, founded as part of the first degree-granting college for women in the U.S., and fully incorporated into Tulane University in 1987. The department is at an exciting moment in its trajectory. We are expanding on our commitment to reflect the transnational networks of the contemporary art world and building on our connections to our culturally diverse and profoundly creative home city of New Orleans, itself a global cultural capital. The Newcomb Art Department embraces this commitment. We are searching for a collaborative faculty member in photography with the ability to teach the majority of the following areas: lighting, digital workflow, inkjet printing, film processing, scanning, B&W darkroom printing, alternative and hybrid photographic processes, cameraless photography, the evolving utilization of AI in image creation, and courses addressing issues of representation in historical and/or contemporary contexts. The ideal candidate will possess a dynamic record of utilizing and teaching photographic media, employing an integrated approach to cultivating artistic practice across both traditional and emerging processes. We are particularly interested in artist-educators whose practice engages with the nature of representation, decolonization, documentary methods that challenge historical uses of the genre, performative aspects of the medium, or any new form of practice that contributes to the expanded field of photography. Our photography facilities include a B&W darkroom with 16 enlargers, an advanced/private darkroom for alternative processes and color film developing, a digital classroom with Macintosh units and Adobe software, an Imacon large format film scanner, large-format inkjet printers, and a wide range of photographic equipment for student checkout. The department has also recently built a new lighting studio, and we would like this faculty member to be interested in utilizing this space in their classes. The Professor of Practice in Photography teaches undergraduate studio courses, with the opportunity to teach thematic, interdisciplinary, and/or graduate-level studio courses when possible. This faculty member will also serve on BFA and MFA committees (as their schedule allows) within the interdisciplinary art environment of these programs. The course load for this position is 3:3. Responsibilities: ●      Teach 3 courses per semester in both fall and spring, including introductory-level courses.●      Support our students in developing creative works as part of a socially and culturally engaged research university.●      Serve on an average of two MFA committees per year, which meet twice a semester for one hour.●      Serve on an average of two BFA committees per year, which meet twice a semester for  45 minutes.●      Contribute to the safe and effective supervision of the photography facilities, in concert with other colleagues and staff.  About the Newcomb Art Department: The Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University is devoted to the study and production of visual art within the context of Tulane University's strong tradition in the liberal arts. The Department emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary art-making and supports myriad forms of expression with concentrations in Sculpture, Glass, Ceramics, Photography, Printmaking, Digital Arts and Painting & Drawing. Located in New Orleans, a vibrant and culturally rich city in the Gulf South, the Newcomb Art Department draws from a diverse and exciting range of artistic and cultural production. Local resources for artists include Prospect New Orleans (an international art triennial), the Joan Mitchell Center, the Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. New Orleans is also home to vibrant artist-run gallery spaces in the St. Claude Avenue Arts District, as well as a cluster of commercial galleries on Julia Street and in Uptown New Orleans.
Qualifications:
Requirements:  ●      MFA or equivalent terminal degree●      Active exhibition record●      A minimum of one year of teaching experience beyond the graduate teaching assistant level.●      Comprehensive knowledge of the photographic medium in both contemporary and historical contexts.●      Fluency in contemporary cultural and aesthetic discourses.●      Ability to teach traditional analog photography methods, digital techniques, and lighting.●      Commitment to emerging technologies and the ability to update course content in response to changing digital and technological worlds.●      Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively.●      Service and community engagement are highly desirable.●      Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice with regard to curricular development, inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies or working with a diverse faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
