Job Description Summary
The Neuropsychologist will assess and treat patients with physical disability due to chronic and traumatic illnesses and injuries to assist in dealing with emotional adjustment to disability and compensating for loss of cognitive abilities. Obtain history from medical documents, conduct initial psychological assessment, treat patients and families in an individual and group format, perform psychological and neuropsychological testing to diagnose and formulate treatment plans as appropriate.

The Neuropsychologist will also have additional training and experience in neuropsychological assessment defined ideally as Board Certification in Neuropsychology awarded by the American Psychological Association (APA), but minimally as completion of a two year Post Doctorate with a concentration in the area of Neuropsychological Assessment from an APA approved institution.

Job Description

The Neuropsychologist will:

  • Conduct clinical assessments through structured interviews of patients, families and other relevant parties to formulate an individualized plan of treatment. Select, administer, interpret and report on results of psychological and neuropsychological tests to develop treatment plans, counsel patients and families regarding deficits, diagnose cognitive problems and provide recommendations for remediation.
  • Employ various structured and unstructured treatment techniques on an individual and/or group basis to address psychological needs of patients and their families. Adapt care as appropriate for the age and development of the patient. Assure patient safety in all aspects of service delivery.
  • Monitor patient's progress during treatment and revise goals and plans as necessary. Alert appropriate treatment team members to critical changes in patient's psychological status.
  • Consult with treatment teams regarding psychological and neuropsychological factors that affect implementation of and compliance with treatment, goals and therapeutic relationships. Participate in clinical and programmatic team meetings.
  • Contribute to discharge planning by providing community referrals and resources for psychological services and providing education to family members regarding the patient's status, management of emotional and behavioral concerns.
  • Complete appropriate documentation of assessments and treatment of patients and families. Comply with prescribed standards for adequacy and timeliness of documentation. Accurately bill for services and adhere to standards set for level of clinical productivity.
  • Evaluate own performance and development in relation to institutional and discipline specific standards. Maintain prescribed organizational competencies and discipline specific licensure. Seek continuing education and certifications to stay current and/or advance in discipline specific practices.
  • Adhere to and conducts practice according to prescribed ethical codes of the organization and discipline.
  • Contribute to the success and advancement of the organization through appropriate productivity; apply discipline specific expertise for program planning and evaluation; contribute to efficient/effective delivery of services.
  • Participate in a variety of scholarly activities for professional development and advancement of the goals of the organization. Collaborate with others in applied research in the field of rehabilitation, psychology and neuropsychology. Lecture and teach within the organization and at other external professional forums. Contribute to academic life in the organization by seeking academic appointment, participating in committees, and mentoring students in clinical practice.
  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships
  • Outpatient, Day Rehab: Reports directly to Clinical Manager.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Current licensure by the State of Illinois.
  • Completion of a Ph.D. or Psy.D. from an accredited school of psychology and successful completion of a clinical internship and necessary postdoctoral supervised experience to obtain licensure. Knowledge of psychological principles, development, interpersonal dynamics, behavioral modification and other treatment techniques acquired through this level of academic study.
  • Approximately two to three years of progressively more complex experience in health related clinical environments. Advanced training and certification in health psychology, rehabilitation psychology and/or neuropsychology desirable to meet this standard.
  • Additional training and experience in neuropsychological assessment defined ideally as Board Certification in Neuropsychology awarded by the American Psychological Association (APA), but minimally as completion of a two year Post Doctorate with a concentration in the area of Neuropsychological Assessment from an APA approved institution
  • Interpersonal skills necessary for effective communication with patients, families, physicians, other allied health professionals and organizational administrators.
  • Analytic skills to exercise good judgment and problem-solving in delivery of clinical and administrative services.
  • Knowledge and application of general professional skills for attention to detail, accountability and follow through, flexibility and adaptability to changing work requirements.

Working Conditions
  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
