Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, performs laboratory services for the Newborn Screening Program; this is a state mandated, public health initiative that involves testing dried blood spots collected from the heal of every baby born in Indiana. Through screening, we are able to detect various genetic and metabolic disorders so that treatment can be initiated prior to symptoms.
  • Performs advanced and specialized laboratory testing.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the scientific principles in the diagnostic procedures.
  • Follows all SOP's to ensure ongoing method performance, quality assurance, sample analysis and data reporting.
  • Performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of all laboratory activities.
  • Participates in the development and modification of SOP's and assists in establishing good workflow.
  • Works with the Department of Health and all state designated partners to ensure timely follow-up and treatment through a comprehensive follow-up program.
  • Participates as a collaborative partner in a team-based environment.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides training and guidance to technicians
  • Performs exams using proper equipment as ordered by providers
  • Checks to be sure all reports are filed promptly and sent to ordering providers for review
  • Makes sure charges are entered correctly by checking order list or by entering data into EMR for outside providers, so patients will be billed properly
  • Sends test results to qualified provider for analysis
  • Monitors equipment and performs regular maintenance and inspections as needed
  • Ensures equipment is repaired and is in good working order

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school associated with technician specialty
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years experience in technician specialty
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • Associated state technical certification upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Location

Work Hours

Monday - Friday (4 x 10 hour days) with an occasional weekend rotation.
