SUMMARY:

The Utility Lead is a member of Heilman Dining Center's utility team and oversees the day-to-day utility operations to support the residential dining hall. The Utility Lead participates hands-on in cleaning and sanitation activities, according to proper health code procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision and Training:

  • Provides leadership and guidance to utility staff, setting high standards of cleanliness, organization, and sanitation.
  • Supervises staff to ensure cleanliness in all areas of Heilman Center (excluding Post Office), including outside areas surrounding Heilman Center.
  • Ensures all utility activities meet established standards.
  • Ensures all safety procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Provides daily direction and assigns special projects to employees.
  • Trains staff.
Operations:
  • Assigns daily staff work assignments and break times.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas: cleans; delegates daily cleaning duties to staff; maintains cleaning logs; participates hands-on as needed.
  • Disposes of trash and waste materials according to established procedures.
  • Moves furniture and staging, and completes related tasks to set up dining rooms and meeting areas.
  • Monitors chemical and small equipment usage and inventory. Works with services managers to ensure that all product is in-house, based on par levels and forecasts.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and reports and/or rectifies safety hazards.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions or breakdowns.
  • Opens or closes utility department, as needed.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: This position requires long periods of standing and walking, and the ability to lift 50 lbs., in conditions that are often, hot, humid, or cold. Must be able to safely use and operate typical kitchen tools and equipment. Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, on occasion.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Working knowledge of utility department functions including janitorial, dishwashing, trash management, sanitation codes, safe sanitation practices and procedures, and cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of utility supplies, equipment, and/or services, ordering and inventory control.
  • Knowledge of and ability to exercise basic management principles, including leading and training staff.
  • Skilled in reading, mathematics, and written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise flexibility and work calmly and efficiently under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain established quality control standards.
EDUCATION:

High school diploma or GED required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • 2 years' experience in utility or janitorial work in a high-volume hotel, restaurant, or college foodservice required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, non-exempt position
  • Hours are 12:00 - 10:00 p.m.; 8 hrs./day; 40 hrs./week; rotating days and weekends
  • This position is designated as essential personnel and, during inclement weather and emergency situations is required to be available to the University as needed.
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 2 (Hiring Range $15.15 to $17.80 per hour)
