GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision provide grounds maintenance activities with the Facilities & Public Safety Department. The Grounds Maintenance worker will focus on responsibilities in turfgrass, landscape maintenance, equipment operations and pesticide applications.

The work schedule for this position will typically be 7 am to 3:30 pm.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices by all maintenance personnel.
  • Assist in planning, prioritizing, delegation, supervising, implementation and follow-up of full and part time staff.
  • Responsible for calibration of equipment and application of restricted use pesticides
  • Maintain accurate records, inventory and proper storage of campus chemical as per State regulations
  • Monitor equipment utilization, troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance and repair.
  • Perform routine grounds maintenance responsibilities such as, but not limited to mowing and trimming grass, managing weeds, waste management, snow removal and other general requirements for maintaining a high standard of appearance of all campus property, including sidewalks, loading docks, parking lots, building entrances and structures, as well as other common areas across campus.
  • Maintain inventory of all other expendable supplies. Assemble materials and supplies from storage areas and transfer safely to work site(s).
  • Subject matter expert in trees, shrubs and groundcovers.
  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
  • Be able and willing to represent the College in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve.
  • Ability to safely operate, maintain and detect defects in equipment and make minor repairs or adjustments.
  • Ability to evaluate turf and landscape plant material for disease, pest and/or cultural problems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the job involved.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, other department staff and supervisory personnel.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working/technical knowledge of various horticultural equipment, lawn mowers (hand, power and riding), tractors, skid loader, forklift, Tele-handler, dump & bucket truck, spraying equipment, snow plows, snow blowers, sanders, and other related grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Skilled knowledge in computerized email communications, search engines, and other data recovery tools.
  • Maintain State of Iowa Pesticide Applicator 3OT License, recordkeeping and Certifications
  • Maintain - or obtain within 90 days - Class B CDL Driver's License with passenger endorsement

Light to medium work. Position involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally (10-33%); up to 20 pounds frequently (34-66%), and up to 10 pounds constantly (67-100%) to move objects. Physically able to perform routine reaching, grasping and repetitive motion constantly (67-100%); stooping, kneeling, walking, bending, lifting, talking, climbing and balancing frequently (34-66%); and crouching, crawling, standing, sitting, pushing and pulling occasionally (10-33%). Work activities occur most frequently (34-66%) outside and occasionally (10-33%) inside.

Persons working in this position will be subject to extreme heat (temperatures above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour); and extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour).

Potentially subject to bio-hazardous waste; chemicals; moving mechanical parts; electrical current; working on scaffolding and high places up to 25 feet; bucket truck lift up to 55 feet; atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system or the skin; fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation, noise, and vibration.

Person in this position must satisfactorily complete the college's safety program; Blood Borne Pathogens training; OSHA 10, FERPA training program and CPR/First-Aid training as a member of the Emergency Response and Control Team.

Hepatitis B immunization is offered to all employees who have the potential exposure risk to blood or body fluids at no cost to the employee. Employees who choose not to receive the immunization must sign a waiver.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two-year degree in horticulture or related field and 1-3 year of landscaping, tree or grounds maintenance experience.
  • State of Iowa Pesticide Applicators certification (i.e. Core, 3OT, Roadway, Aquatics) obtained with-in first 60 days of employment.
  • Ability to work under physical/environmental demands.
