Job Summary
Utilizing electrical design expertise, provide quality assurance Design Review services, including but not limited to reviewing conceptualizations, studies, plans, specifications, and construction submittals to confirm conformance with applicable codes, standards and University Facilities Standards. Provide the analysis, development, and design of electrical projects for campus buildings. Assist in the project scoping to assess the needs of projects. Provide support to other units. Provide technical opinions, reviews and documents to provide safe, reliable, comfortable, productive, sustainable, and cost-effective facilities to support the Mission of the University.
Duties and Responsibilities

Project Design and Design Review

  • Provide troubleshooting expertise for existing electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems that are not functioning properly to identify problems, determine appropriate resolution, and provide recommended corrective work in project program analysis format with clear definition of scope and probable costs.
  • Provide detailed design documents (drawings and specifications) for construction projects for remodeling, renovation, repair, replacement, or new work. This includes all necessary engineering analysis, design and layout of electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems.
  • Provide detailed engineering analysis of electrical and lighting systems.
  • Provide detailed review of projects designed by outside professional services consultants (PSC's) and inhouse designers. Prepare written review comments for items not compliant with code or University Facilities Standards and for items not compatible, coordinated or acceptable for the proposed use.
  • Participate in formal or informal discussions related to review comments.
  • Provide technical review & opinion on variance approval request forms submitted on projects.
  • Provide assessments of existing buildings and grounds for condition, function, and compatibility with the Campus Master Plan.
  • Provide assessment of existing electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems of campus buildings for operations, capacity, functionality, compatibility with associated systems and use of spaces served.
  • Provide assessment of new technologies, equipment, and systems for electrical, lighting, and fire alarm building elements and associated equipment in order to evaluate applicability and value to campus projects.
  • Prepare and present reports, programs or drawings to F&S management or staff as assigned.
  • Utilize software and information resources available to the F&S Division. This includes Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), AutoCAD, AiM, the my.fs.illinois.edu Portal, SharePoint, and internet offerings.
Construction and Warranty Support
  • Provide review of electrical, lighting, and fire alarm construction submittals and testing verification as requested.
  • Attend construction progress meetings as needed or by request.
  • Provide technical support and on-site inspections as requested for the Commissioning & Inspection Group.
  • Assist Lead Inspector and occupant with technical issues during the warranty or post construction phase.
Project Planning Assistance
  • Assist with project planning and program analysis phase for new construction and renovation projects to assist in the development of detailed technical scopes, and comments on the schedules and budgets.
Support to Other Units
  • Provide technical support to F&S Crafts and Trades for equipment selection, troubleshooting of building elements and system problems, development of preventive maintenance needs and answer technical questions.
  • Provide electrical, lighting, and fire alarm design expertise in support of Capital Programs/Deferred Maintenance, Engineering Services, Construction Services, Utilities and Engineering Services, Building Maintenance & Grounds, and other F&S Departments as well as campus units.
  • Provide electrical, lighting, and fire alarm engineering support to Design Services, including design
    (drawings and/or specifications) for selected projects. Assist and coordinate with other staff on design and
    review issues.
Campus Committee Assignments
  • Participate in the QBS process for selection of Professional Service Consultants as assigned.
  • Participate in various Deferred Maintenance committees for assessment and prioritization of buildings.
  • Participate in hiring selection committees.
Continuing Education
  • Provide and/or attend training for professional development, technical topics, and teambuilding.
  • Provide assessment of new technologies, equipment and systems to evaluate applicability to our projects and University Facilities Standards.
  • Maintain knowledge in current building codes, University Facilities Standards, State and Federal regulations, and restoration standards, energy codes needed to adequately meet the needs of the Engineering Services Department.
Miscellaneous Duties
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, faculty, staff, administration, professional consultants, and contractors.
  • Provide support in the collaboration, development, and maintenance of the University Facilities Standards.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
  • Five years of progressively more responsible administrative experience in engineering design of electrical, lighting, fire alarm, and related fire safety systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CEM, CEFP, LEED or additional certification in engineering, energy or facility management.
  • Seven (7) or more years of extensive design experience with medium and low voltage distribution systems, lighting, and fire alarm systems with increasing responsibility of project development and management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable building codes, standards, and regulations, including the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Electrical Code, International Energy Conservation Code, National Fire Protection Associate Code, and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of applicable higher education standards, including University Facilities Standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical building systems, particularly in institutional facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of systems modeling and optimum system selection.
  • Knowledge of laboratory electrical design.
  • Developed trouble shooting skills for performance of building systems.
  • General knowledge of building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, and building automation and control systems.
  • Moderate to thorough working skills with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000 per year. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, relevant collective bargaining agreements, and/or budget constraints.
