Job Title: Dredge Boat Pilot

Department: River Operations

Reports To: River Superintendents

SUMMARY

Operates tug boats on river by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned

  • Directs course and speed of boat on basis of specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, water levels and current
  • Responsible for safe operation of boat
  • Responsible for following all Coast Guard rules and procedures along with company procedures
  • Responsible for fleet safety
  • Keeps all required reports up to date
  • Schedules barge switching for maximum efficiency
  • Assist line boat with tow work
  • Spots barges on crane docks
  • Assist with overage at the locks

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises activities of all crew members including engineers, deckhand, and cooks in all areas of operations. (Maintenance, safety, work assignments, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of boat operations

Knowledge of securing lines properly

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or equivalent experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must meet all Coast Guard licensing and endorsement requirements

Must hold valid, current Coast Guard operator's license for uninspected towing vessel
