Position Summary:Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Director, Comparative Medicine - Boca Raton, FL.
Reporting directly to the Vice President for Research, the Director oversees FAU's research animal care facilities that serves the diverse needs of the university scientific community, including provision of animal husbandry care. The Director will be responsible for making final decisions related to Comparative Medicine (CM) operations including personnel, finances, operations and strategic goals.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Assists VPR in strategic planning of animal-related research, including management of resources such as physical plant, equipment, staffing, and space management in order to support and accommodate incoming researchers and the growth of FAU's research enterprise.
Serves as the liaison between the VPR and Facilities department in regard to all vivaria and satellite facilities housing animals and procedural space for research animals.
Responsible for management and reporting animal research-related facility operations including, but not limited to, HVAC, temperature/humidity, equipment calibration and environmental conditions.
Responsible for the direction and management of CM as part of the animal care and use program and a core service facility of FAU. Including, but not limited to, physical plant conditions, repairs, maintenance, and related reporting.
Responsible for the management of CM as a core service unit. This involves working closely with core directors, representation on research core committees, overseeing the monthly billing process, and determining per diem rates.
Oversees programmatic, fiscal, and personnel management of CM, working closely with DoR Associate Vice President for Finance. This includes but is not limited to overseeing the development of operating procedures, budget management, and all aspects of personnel management.
Responsible for working with the IACUC, Attending Veterinarian (AV), Research Integrity, and other FAU administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and policies related to the humane care and use of animals for research, teaching, and testing.
Responsible for working with CM personnel and veterinary team in the development and implementation of policies and SOPs for the care, sanitation and environmental monitoring in the facilities.
Provides professional guidance and support to FAU researchers managing satellite facilities.
Responsible for negotiation and management of contracted equipment and service vendors required to support FAU's vivaria.
Responsible for communication with faculty, researchers, administrators, and students to ensure that facility requirements are understood, implemented, and managed.
Responsible for keeping abreast of regulatory requirements impacting animal research, including, but not limited to, the environmental and physical plant conditions of the vivaria.
Other job-related duties as assigned.
