Job Title: Formulation Laboratory Technician


Location: 9330 Zionsville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46077
Duration: 1 Year Contract
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM)
Start Date: Preferred December 9, 2024
Hourly Rate: $22.00 - $23.00 per hour


Job Description:

  • Client is seeking a Formulation Laboratory Technician to provide technical support within the Product Science & Technology (R&D) team. This contract position offers an exciting opportunity for candidates to contribute to the development of formulations through hands-on experimentation, testing, and documentation. The incumbent will work closely with formulation development scientists to assist in preparing and evaluating formulation samples, using a variety of laboratory instruments, and ensuring all processes are documented according to internal and regulatory standards.
  • This position requires a Chemistry Technical Degree (Bachelor's degree required), along with a strong desire to learn and grow within the field of formulation science. Candidates should possess solid technical experience, ideally in a laboratory setting, but prior formulation experience is not required. Training will be provided on lab equipment and data systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Formulation Preparation & Testing: Assist formulation development scientists by preparing formulation samples and evaluating them for physical properties such as viscosity, particle size, and density. Operate standard laboratory equipment such as bead mills, high shear mixers, air jet mills, and blenders.
  • Evaluation & Documentation: Independently assess formulation samples using laboratory instruments, including laser diffraction particle size analyzers, rheometers, pH meters, and density meters. Record and report experimental results accurately in laboratory notebooks and through formal reports.
  • Lab Equipment Maintenance: Ensure laboratory equipment and instruments are properly maintained and in good working order. Report any issues with equipment to the appropriate team members.
  • EH&S Compliance: Ensure all samples are labeled according to Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) requirements. Follow safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe and compliant lab environment.
  • Documentation Support: Assist in the preparation of necessary documentation for product updates and changes. Communicate progress and any issues to project owners and other stakeholders.
  • Housekeeping & Safety: Maintain a clean and organized laboratory, ensuring high standards of hygiene and safety are met. Lead by example in promoting safe work habits and adherence to safety standards.

Required Qualifications:
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field (required). A Master's degree is acceptable but may be considered overqualified for this role.
  • Experience: Prior formulation experience is not required. However, any technical laboratory experience in academia or industry is a plus. Strong interest and ability to work with laboratory equipment and scientific processes.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient with laboratory instruments such as rheometers, laser diffraction particle size analyzers, pH meters, etc.
    • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) is helpful for documenting and reporting results.
    • Ability to troubleshoot issues independently and propose solutions.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong communication skills to clearly convey project status and results.
    • Attention to detail and high levels of accuracy in documenting experiments.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
