Position Summary:

This role involves planning and implementing a year-long program of student engagement activities that cater to all student populations, cultivate a sense of belonging, and positively contribute to student retention and success. This includes collaborating with various departments and organizations on campus, generating avenues for involvement, coordinating cornerstone events, leading portions of the new student orientation process, and promoting health and wellness initiatives.

Description of Key Responsibilities:


  1. In collaboration with the campus community, plan, organize, and implement a comprehensive, year‐long program of student engagement activities that cultivates a sense of belonging and meets the social needs of a diverse student population and that contributes to the growth and development of students. Provide a full and enriching calendar of events during each semester, in collaboration with colleagues and student clubs and organizations. Provide direct oversight, leadership, and support for Cardinal Activities Board, NCC Dance and Cheerleading organizations, and other percentage-based organizations.
  2. Provide support during the new student Orientation process, including the planning, organizing, and executing of Welcome Week.
  3. Coordinate and manage services and programs designed to support commuter students and enhance commuter engagement and success.
  4. Provide oversight and guidance to student organizations on campus. Train and communicate with student organizations and their advisors on policy, procedure, and budgeting information. Deliver administrative advising and event coordination assistance for all student organizations. Maintain finance system processes for percent-based budget organizations.
  5. Oversee the Student Engagement and Belonging web pages for both the external and internal website and social media platforms, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and usefulness of information presented electronically.
  6. Develop innovative mechanisms for communicating with students and the campus community regarding involvement opportunities and events.
  7. Maintain the online student engagement tracking system Presence (i.e. Modern Campus Involve), ensuring that it is up to date at the start of each academic semester and year and on-going throughout the year. Maintain, update, and train the campus community on the platform. Market this student engagement tool to students, faculty, and staff as a way of learning about activities and events on campus.
  8. Supervise graduate assistant staff as assigned by the Director for Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Co-oversee the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of students to operate the Harold and Eva White Activities Center (WAC), ensuring a professional, helpful, and orderly environment.
  9. In collaboration with the Director for Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, ensure robust commemoration and celebration of key cultural events and holidays to drive student engagement, awareness, and belonging.
  10. Serve on College committees and initiatives as needed, including Sankofa Experience efforts in collaboration with designated faculty member(s) and the Director for Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and represent the College and Student Engagement and Belonging at appropriate professional meetings and conferences.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director for Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

An individual in this position must possess the proficiency, wherewithal and knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality service to both internal and external constituents of the College.

  1. Clear commitment to and understanding of the mission of a comprehensive college of the liberal arts and sciences with a substantial resident student population. Commitment to an environment that nurtures cooperation, diversity, and inclusion.

  6. The ability to hire, train, supervise, develop, and evaluate graduate assistants and student workers and support college diversity goals by hiring a culturally diverse staff reflective of the community being served.
  7. Ability to relate to, serve as a role model for, and advise a wide variety of students.
  8. A developmental understanding of college students and a desire to facilitate and encourage their development in a highly relational, supportive and service‐oriented environment.
  9. Commitment to an environment that nurtures cooperation and diversity. Sensitivity to multicultural issues and support for diverse and underrepresented populations.
  10. The ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, including presentations to groups. Ability to contribute to the development of high quality written and electronic materials which reflect positively on the College.
  11. The ability to balance daily demands and unexpected situations within a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment, while also balancing the need to be forward focused and plan for the future.
  12. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.
Distinguishing Characteristics:

The role is responsible for overseeing and directly providing activities which positively contribute to the college experience of students by complementing and supplementing their academic work. This work of cultivating student engagement, creating a sense of belonging, and supporting student development are essential to helping NCC fulfill its mission of supporting and challenging students to develop to be curious, engaged, ethical, and purposeful citizens. The individual in this position is responsible for overseeing and directly providing various activities to attract and engage students from diverse backgrounds. Emphasis is placed on evening and weekend programming, as well as supporting student organizations.

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree is required.

Experience:

A minimum of (1) one to (3) three years of experience in student activities and/or an office environment particularly where dealing directly with students or the public is highly preferred. Experience in event planning and in working with diverse student population is preferred.
