GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.
Responsible for the overall direction and supervision of Lab Control under the guidance of the Director of Lab Support Services. Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of a specimen processing system and other associated procedures within the Department.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
Responsible for the daily supervision to ensure the standards, policies and procedures of the department are implemented and maintained. Plans, organizes, and schedules staffing according to departmental needs.a. Develops absenteeism back-up procedure and maintains adequate back-up schedule filling in absences in person if no other personnel are available.
b. Implements hospital sick and vacation policy giving priority to department needs before approving leave.
c. Monitors unscheduled absences and tardiness in accordance with hospital policy.
Communicates hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and other appropriate information to the Lab Control staff. Holds regularly scheduled meetings and maintains documentation for ease of reference. Develops systems for immediate updating of information as necessary for the ongoing smooth operation of the Lab Control area. Communicates changes to the appropriate laboratory and hospital staff. Serves as Lab Control liaison to other hospital departments and off site practices to resolve problems and initiate new procedures. Investigates incidents and complaints of less than adequate laboratory performance, including the tracking of specimens and requisitions. Responsible for maintaining and monitoring workload statistics in Lab Control. Makes suggestions and implements procedures to improve productivity and workflow. Implements accessioning systems to ensure the continuous smooth flow of specimens from receipt through processing hand-off. Determines need for and assists the Director with LIS revision requests. Develops and maintains department procedures and policies (SOP) for all workstations. Develops and implements orientation, training, and annual competency documents and testing for all personnel. Assists with Continuing Medical Education (CME) and related professional development under the guidance of the Director. Responsible for hiring, counseling, evaluating and terminating employees, following established guidelines, under the guidance of the Director of Lab Support Services. Responsible for timely annual performance reviews for staff. Responsible for the weekly payroll. Prepares documents related to personnel changes, as needed. Assists in the preparation and development of the statistical, operating and capital budgets. Assists in monitoring operating budget with follow-up of any discrepancies. Responsible for ensuring an appropriate level of supplies are maintained and ordered. Delegates to senior staff as appropriate. Is responsible to be aware of JC National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH and Laboratory polices and procedures. B.S/Associates degree in medical laboratory science/biology preferred. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Must have the ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of Clinicians, Administrators, hospital personnel and outside contacts. Must have the ability to make logical, mature judgments and seek assistance when necessary. Must have the ability to promote a spirit of professionalism and performance excellence among the Lab Control staff. Must be proactive and have the ability to work independently within established framework. Must develop and maintain knowledge of clinical laboratory specimen processing procedures: Including specimen storage and shipment/delivery to other departments, hospitals and reference labs.
