The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for the campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Auxiliary Facility Operations within the Department of Facilities Management and Planning, and in close coordination with various University Event Managers: the incumbent is responsible for the management and supervision for production support for the maintenance, design, fabrication, and arrangement of multiple facility conversions, reconfigurations, setups, rigging, and productions throughout campus, including support for various Athletics and Recreation activities in the Ritchie Center. The Building Services Manager oversees the Building Services team, which is comprised of full- and part-time employees, and arranges and coordinates the efforts for temporary labor provided by outside vendors. The Building Services Manager is directly responsible for hiring and training all conversion labor and is accountable for performing the duties of this team in accordance with the operations budget associated with this assigned area.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • The position is responsible for coordinating and executing the efforts of the Building Services team throughout campus, in support of events of various size and complexity. The position is responsible for verifying that these efforts meet the expectations of the various stakeholders for each event, as agreed upon prior to execution.
  • The position has direct responsibility for the proper construction, installation, and deployment of various sport-facility equipment, with a focus on various systems associated with supporting our hockey and gymnastics programs.
  • The position participates in pre-event planning sessions hosted by the University Event Managers, including Athletics and Recreation, to provide technical expertise and to gather information related to proposed event, and establishes costs to be communicated to our clients, whether internal or external. Prepares and communicates all contract settlement issues with the Assistant Director of Auxiliary Facility Operations as necessary and appropriate.
  • The position is expected to understand the principles and applications of event rigging to ensure that any apparatus attached to the facility in either a permanent or temporary manner, by either a university employee or approved service providers, is attached in compliance with all safety regulations, and in a manner as to minimize risk to the University and the physical assets owned by the University.
  • The position is expected to maintain an accurate and timely inventory of all equipment associated with the effort to convert the assembly facilities and the various spaces in and around the Ritchie Wellness Center.
  • The position has direct supervisory responsibility for all Supervisors, Crew Chiefs and Building Service Specialists who lead the conversion and set up effort, including direct oversight responsibility for contract labor staff.
  • Implements preventive maintenance programs that achieve the objective of decreasing reactive maintenance and costs.
  • Develops, implements, and ensures employee compliance with operating and safety procedures and trains employees in proper work and safety techniques.
  • Exercises fiscal responsibility by ensuring that equipment and supplies are inventoried and safeguarded, that materials and labor for the work performed are used effectively and efficiently, and that shop expenses do not exceed budgetary resources.
  • Maintains records as required to provide adequate information on systems, purchase orders, and bids; oversees the timely completion of work order reports and provides other reports and analyses as requested.
  • Performs to work at the highest level in their area of expertise.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers for the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as weights, measures, discounts, proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of introductory and intermediate algebra.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Ability to interpret multiple instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to quickly assess a variety of data in emergency situations to develop effective solutions.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, equipment, Codes (e.g., OSHA, EPA, building), and regulations of an assigned area.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety regulations, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the construction and operational principles of assigned area systems. Some understanding of engineering concepts.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, ability to understand and apply University and Department policies and procedures consistently and fairly.
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise effectively the work of others.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment required for the performance of duties.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from service manuals, blueprints, sketches, diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to maintain a variety of records, prepare reports, and order supplies, using computerized and manual systems
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials required for work projects.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with various professional, non-professional, and skilled trades personnel. Ability to respond to emergencies and work a flexible schedule when workload requires.
Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of one year of program management experience is necessary.
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory experience is necessary.
  • Valid Colorado Driver's License and insurable by the University of Denver's Insurance Carrier.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College-level training emphasizing media, music, theater production/stagecraft, and stage management is desirable.
  • Professional certification in Assembly Facility Management is desirable
  • Experience in production and operations support of Athletic, Recreation, or general assembly event support at a university, educational or public event setting.
Working Environment
  • The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, chemical exposure, confined spaces, and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
Physical Activities
  • The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls: reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee is required to lift more than 75 lbs.
  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Schedule

The University's administrative offices are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Work schedule may vary.

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is 11.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $85,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
