Job Summary:

The Program of Landscape Architecture in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA), at the University of Texas at Arlington, invites applications for a Rank of Assistant Professor of Practice (Academic Professional Track) with a focus on sustainability and resiliency in urban design and landscape architecture. This position is an academic year (9-month) appointment. The successful candidate will primarily teach in the innovative Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Urban Design (BSSUD) program. The BSSUD program prepares graduates for careers where students can contribute to creating cities and urban spaces that are resilient, welcoming, and environmentally sustainable. The program also serves as a preparation program for students who pursue advanced degrees in related fields such as landscape architecture, architecture, and planning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Program of Landscape Architecture (housing the BSSUD program) welcomes applications for an academic professional track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice, beginning August 2025, or earlier.

This is primarily a teaching position with additional complementary research and service responsibilities. The successful candidate will teach studio, core, and elective courses including capstone advising in the BSSUD program. There is also an opportunity to contribute to the MLA program, by serving on thesis committees and teaching core courses. In addition to a focus on sustainability and resiliency in urban design and landscape architecture, candidates with expertise in geospatial technologies and strong computer and hand graphic skills are encouraged to apply.

The teaching load is anticipated to be a minimum of two design studio equivalents per semester while the exact teaching assignments will be reviewed based on the candidate's experience and qualifications. In alignment with UTA's status as an R1 research university, a portion of the candidate's workload will be apportioned to research and/or creative activities in their area of expertise.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a terminal landscape architecture degree from an LAAB-accredited institution (MLA).
  • Applicants must demonstrate an inspiring teaching agenda and/or evidence of excellence in teaching design courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong skills and knowledge for teaching and research/creative work in at least three of the following areas:
    • Sustainability & Resiliency
    • Urban Design
    • Landscape Architecture
    • Landscape Architecture History
    • Geospatial Technologies
    • Graphic Communications
Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualification, applicants with the following conditions are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Evidence of exceptional design work and graphic communication skills.
  • Professional licensure or demonstrated significant professional experience in urban planning and landscape design or related design field.
  • A Ph.D. or advanced research degree in a relevant field of expertise.
  • Experience with community outreach and engagement and its incorporation into teaching and/or practice.
Department Information:

The Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Urban Design is within the Program of Landscape Architecture. BSSUD prepares graduates for careers where students can contribute to creating cities and urban spaces that are resilient and environmentally sustainable. It equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle complex urban challenges in the 21st century. It is a four-year program (120 credit hours), whose innovative curriculum prepares students for the rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of urban design with approximately 120 credit hours, including 18 hours of prescribed electives from over a dozen disciplines.

The UTA Master in Landscape Architecture program focuses on ecological and environmental resiliency, urban placemaking, and quality of life by taking advantage of what makes the program unique; its location. The Dallas-Arlington-Fort Worth Metroplex provides exceptional opportunities for students and professionals to produce practical solutions to the challenges within the most rapidly expanding urban area of The United States. Through interdisciplinary teaching, research, and community engagement, the program promotes leading-edge design and planning within a transferable urban lab environment (DFW). Additional learning opportunities are offered for working professionals beyond the MLA, including continuing education, certificates, and executive programs.

Established through the Unit Effectiveness Process (UEP) process support the program's mission, and also are aligned with the standards established by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB) for first professional degree programs in landscape architecture that encompass the body of knowledge common to the profession and promote acquisition of the knowledge and skills necessary to enter professional practice.

The following educational goals and objectives are used to guide curriculum and long-range planning: 1. Proficiency in communication, 2. Proficiency in verbal communication, 3. Identification of natural and cultural systems, 4. Knowledge of computer applications, 5. Knowledge of construction materials, methods, technologies and applications, 6. Advanced written research/communication, and 7. Design Comprehension, Creativity and Rigor.

In addition to the Program of Landscape Architecture, CAPPA includes the School of Architecture, and the Department of Public Affairs and Planning. CAPPA institutes and centers have forged numerous partnerships throughout the DFW Metropolitan area including the Arlington Urban Design Center (AUDC), Center for Metropolitan Density (CFMD), Center for Transportation, Equity, Decisions and Dollars (CTEDD), Digital Architecture Research Consortium (DARC), David Dillon Center for Texas Architecture (DDC), and Institute of Urban Studies (IUS).
