Assistant Directors in Student Central on Union deliver student services in the key areas of federal, state, and campus based financial aid, merit-based scholarships, financial literacy, registration, enrollment, and student academic records including grades, transcripts, and certifications. Assistant Directors must maintain knowledge of federal and state regulations, university policies, and procedures relative to the delivery of student financial aid which involves more than 30,000 students annually and more than $500 million dollars in financial aid.

Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Helps ensure prompt, accurate, and efficient services to students and their families, including a global alumni base of more than 500,000.
  • Provides service for a wide range of other public inquires in addition to providing frontline contact services for faculty, staff, administrators, and other university departments and offices.
  • Works closely with the Office of the Registrar and the Office of Student Financial Assistance to evaluate to make recommendations relative to the modification, enhancement, and redesign of student service delivery systems and helps ensure that all electronic and print media is consistent with program requirements.
  • Assists with financial aid and financial literacy outreach programs to both campus and community partners.
  • Participates in strategic planning by participating in various quality control and management task forces within OEM.
  • Responsible for designing and administering student services across various or multiple student services job families and initiatives, including those involving student life, programming, and support and/or student services administration such as academic advising, financial aid/scholarships, and registrar. Initiatives and programs may be focused on multiple student populations.
  • Frequently interfaces directly with students and collaborates with staff in own department and other departments on shared student services goals.
  • Delivers full range of services to all clients including current students, prospective students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Participates in office based task forces, quality control assessments, and provides input from their direct experiences to the senior management of the office. These assessments may affect the way student services are delivered in other offices, ie. Admissions, Registrar, Bursar.
  • Monitors the delivery system and client satisfaction with consumer information as well as interprets the implications of federal, state, and university regulatory changes and provide recommendations to senior management on impact as well as suggests possible courses of outcome.
  • Conducts quality control assessments and recommends modifications to the delivery system and/or consumer information to senior management based on these assessments. Assists senior management in planning recruitment and retention strategies, as well as planning processing strategies.
  • Works closely with Senior Assistant Director and other campus departments (Bursar, Registrar, Financial Aid) to find potential resolution for student issues regarding campus/department policies and procedures including both financial aid and enrollment related issues.
  • Evaluates possible courses of action relative to the facts presented in a given situation, assesses possible outcomes and provides guidance to the student based on this analysis.
  • Provides guidance and direction to other staff and subordinates on possible courses of action.
  • Assesses risks and makes recommendations to senior management on most viable outcomes.
  • Maintain knowledge of developing national issues in financial aid and enrollment management using online newsletters and participation in professional organizations (such as NASFAA, MASFAA, ISFAA, AACRAO, IACRAO).
  • Detailed knowledge of current issues in order to counsel the student appropriately. This knowledge may be applied through documenting procedures, designing consumer publications, evaluating a business process, or assessing client satisfaction, and making recommendations to senior management.
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that touch on various/multiple student-related goals, such as enhancing and reinforcing academic engagement and experiential learning; increasing student engagement, wellness, and involvement; fostering learning, inclusion, and development; supporting students in crisis and adversity; and improving the student campus experience.
  • Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting 1-on-1 to discuss areas of concern on campus, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student services goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
  • Projects outcomes for services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student services against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Serves on committees and performs student services research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student services initiatives to ensure student participation and engagement.
  • May provide guidance to other student services staff; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in higher education student affairs, public affairs, counseling, social work, education, business, or related field
Preferred
  • Master's degree in related field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

This position is eligible to work a hybrid schedule (mix between 2 remote workdays and 3 in-person workdays), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.

Advertised Salary

$44,000.00 to $45,000.00 on an annualized basis.
