Job Summary

The Assistant Dean for Engagement and Community provides collaborative support to the Dean, Associate and Assistant Deans, School Directors and Unit Leaders. The Assistant Dean serves as the college's chief subject matter expert on access and engagement matters and participates in the School's Cabinet. The Assistant Dean develops strategies, initiatives, and protocols to aid the school in its goal of attracting and retaining excellent faculty, staff and students from a wide variety of populations.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Reports to the Dean of the Luddy School.
  • Develops, designs, and maintains strategies and programs to support a signature Luddy culture.
  • Identifies audiences and areas for improvement as related to engagement and community in the Luddy School.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on various community-related topics related to faculty, staff, and students, such as cultural understanding, recruitment and retention strategies, and team dynamics.
  • Develops policies in collaboration with relevant stakeholders that support equitable access to a healthy learning and work environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Aligns priorities with the strategic vision for the school, which includes community and culture.
  • Examines the resources and services at the Luddy School and aligns efforts where appropriate to enhance engagement and strengthen internal systems and capabilities to promote transparency and trust.
  • Researches and maintains up-to-date best practices to create and maintain equitable access to a healthy learning and work environment for faculty, staff, and students; implements changes based on research as necessary.
  • Communicates engagement and community activities and information so all stakeholders benefit from the activities.
  • Creates a system to organize, track, evaluate, and assess engagement and community goals that connects the work across campuses, employment type, and functional units.
  • May serve on various committees and provide input on strategic directions for departments or units.
General Responsibilities
  • Implements and oversees the organization's strategic vision and direction by developing, initiating, and/or creating new programs and services, and creating annual work plans and oversees the operating budget.
  • Directs the maintenance of effective office management, financial management, record-keeping, and equipment and software.
  • Plans, directs and implements programs and/or events, including operational objectives, developing branding strategy, targeting audiences for these events, and external outreach and partnership needs.
  • Oversees and/or represents the program and it's timeline in communications to stakeholders, supporting institutions, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public. Troubleshoots and resolves complex issues and programs and how to prevent them.
  • Creates mechanisms, training, and provides advice on a variety of issues such as budget management, software and, advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds.
  • Creates and/or maintains research and activities budgets for programs, identifies funding requirements and funding sources to ensure adequate resources to sustain program goals and mission. Leads and oversees grant writing and/or funding opportunities
  • Evaluates the performance of lower-level staff, recommends development and performance plans, promotions and disciplinary action and is accountable for consistent administration of university policies and procedures.
  • Monitors best practices to create and implement policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree
Preferred
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education upon date of hire
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 8 years in relevant field
Preferred
  • 5 years of experience involving programming and outcome assessment and evaluation
  • Experience designing and implementing engagement and community initiatives within higher education or a complex institution or organization
  • Faculty experience or knowledge of faculty processes and policies

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Independent local travel will be required and due to this, a valid driver's license and willingness to drive is a requirement of the position. International travel may also be required.

Advertised Salary

$100,000.08 - $110,000.04 per year dependent on experience and internal equity

Work Hours

Monday - Friday (standard IU schedule is 8am - 5pm EST); however, schedule will be at times be dependent on different community and engagement events and/or obligations.

Events and other obligations will vary in time so the selected candidate must be capable and willing to work a varied schedule. Evening, weekend, and holiday work will also be occasionally required.
